Londoners are moving to a sleepy seaside town: what's going on

The town of Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex is seeing a surge in interest among young telecommuters, despite being nicknamed "God's waiting room" due to its aging population.

The sleepy suburb offers affordable housing that the capital simply cannot compete with, writes Metro.

The latest data from Zoopla shows that the average property value in London is now estimated at £706,000, with average prices for terraced and detached houses at £781,000 and £776,000 respectively.

So, for potential buyers looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, Bexhill-on-Sea (also known as Bexhill) could be just the ticket.

According to Rightmove, between 2021 and 2022, the average house in Bexhill found a buyer in just 35 days.

A study conducted by the real estate company in 2022 showed that the number of new homes in the area coming to market in January 2022 was up 88% compared to January 2021. Buyer demand for homes in the area increased by 35% in the same period.

In March 2024, the average house price in Bexhill was £338,833, which is about £367,000 less than in London.

The train from London to Bexhill is the best option for commuters, especially if you plan to travel to the city for work, but keep in mind that it is not fast.

It usually takes 1 hour 58 minutes on the regular route, but can take 1 hour 51 minutes on the fastest route. Approximately two hours, this is for fully remote or hybrid workers who only need to visit once or twice a week.
