"Legionnaires' disease": what it is and why it can be dangerous
On Tik Tok, users are sharing stories about how they got sick after staying under the air conditioner. This disease has even received funny nicknames - "Magaluf flu", "air conditioning cough", "Ayia Napa flu". In fact, it is "air convector flu", but it is not as scary as it seems at first glance.
According to the Huffington Post, researchers have found that air conditioning can indeed cause health problems in some people. Its symptoms are similar to a common cold. They include irritation of the mucous membranes, shortness of breath, skin irritation, headache, and fatigue.
Dr. Nathan Spence, a physician who writes his own blog at Tik Tok, shared a video in which he explains that a certain type of pneumonia can be caused by air conditioners.
He explains that dirty air conditioning units in hotel rooms can cause Legionnaires' disease, which is a lung infection that can be contracted by inhaling water droplets from things like air conditioning or a hot tub. It is quite rare, but can be dangerous to health. The doctor warns that if you treat yourself and there is no improvement, it is better to see a pediatrician.
Another Tik Tok user, Ben Matthew Saunders, says the problem with hotel air conditioners is that they are rarely cleaned properly. Therefore, dust, dirt, and mold accumulate. When you rest in your room, all of this gets on your body and in your mouth.
To avoid such health problems, book rooms in reputable hotels with good reviews. And be sure to ask the staff when the air conditioners were last cleaned.
