Large avalanche halts traffic in Alaska
A powerful snow avalanche has slid down the slopes in the state of Alaska, USA. The natural disaster stopped traffic on the Kenai Peninsula highway south of Anchorage.
The avalanche was also accompanied by a blizzard, which made visibility in the region difficult. ABC News told what tourists and locals should prepare for.
Snow drifts have blocked access to most of the Kenai Peninsula. An avalanche hit the Seward Highway near the intersection with the Sterling Highway, forcing utilities to close the road on Sunday, December 24.
Traffic is expected to be suspended until Monday, Christmas Day. The avalanche has blocked access 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of Anchorage.
As a result, residents of several communities, including the town of Seward with a population of about 2,600 people on the Gulf of Alaska, cannot get home. People will not be able to leave there either.
According to the newspaper, this is not the only place where bad weather has affected the celebrations. In the southeast of the Kenai Peninsula, an avalanche warning was issued amid snowfall and winds reaching 30 miles per hour (50 kilometers per hour).
