ITA Airways Expands UK Reach: Rome to London City Now in Flight
ITA Airways, the flag carrier of Italy, has inaugurated a new flight route connecting Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) to London City Airport (LCY), commencing operations on March 31. This move comes as part of the airline's strategic expansion into the British market, previously serving London City from Milan Linate Airport.
From March 31, ITA Airways will operate flights between Rome's primary international gateway and London's most centrally located airport, utilizing the Airbus A220-100 aircraft for the service. This addition not only enhances connectivity between the two cities but also strengthens ITA Airways' presence in the UK.
The airline will provide 12 weekly flights on this new route, emphasizing London City Airport's reputation for punctuality, quick service, and a smooth passenger experience. ITA Airways aims to offer travelers seamless connections from Rome to various destinations across the Mediterranean and South America, leveraging Fiumicino's hub status.
Emiliana Limosani, the Chief Commercial Officer of ITA Airways and CEO of Volare, underscored the significance of the UK market for the airline. She noted the increasing strategic value of the UK, with ITA Airways now offering 100 weekly flights between Italy and the UK during the summer season. This expansion includes a new daily service from Milan Linate to London City starting in April 2024, raising the airline's weekly flights to LCY to a peak of 31 during the summer months.
The Airbus A220-100, ITA Airways' smallest aircraft, has been chosen for its suitability for short-haul flights and is the only model in the fleet certified to land at London City Airport. Before the introduction of the A220-100, the airline utilized wet-leased Embraer E190 aircraft for this route. The A220-100 features onboard WiFi, wide seats, custom lighting, larger windows, and more spacious bins, with interiors designed by Walter De Silva, accommodating 125 passengers in both business and economy class configurations.
This expansion reflects ITA Airways' commitment to enhancing its service offerings and accessibility for travelers between Italy and the UK, further establishing the airline's role in connecting key European cities.
Tailored for Business and Leisure
As ITA Airways expands its footprint in the UK market, this development is particularly beneficial for business travelers who prioritize London City for its convenience and efficiency. However, leisure travelers will also find this route appealing for exploring the historical and cultural richness of Rome and London.
