"Inspired by history": Saudi Arabia intends to build a unique tram
A unique tram will appear in Saudi Arabia, which will run along the historic railway in Hejaz. This is evidenced by a €500 million contract for the supply of a tram, which was signed between the Royal Commission for Development (RCA) of Al-Ula and the French engineering company Alstom, which is known for its projects in Dubai and Qatar.
The tram is expected to have 17 stops and serve 5 districts with archaeological and tourist sites, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was reported by Railway Gazette.
The RCA believes that such a route will reflect the connection of the ancient city of Al-Ula with the history of the region and convey the essence of the pilgrimage of past centuries. Thus, tourists will be able to see: The Old City of Al-Ula, Dadan, Jabal Iqma, the Nabataean Horizon, and the Historic City of Hegra.
Alstom will be responsible for the comprehensive design, integration, installation, testing, and commissioning of the system. In addition, Alstom will provide full maintenance of the trams for 10 years.
Mohamed Khalil, Director of Alstom Saudi Arabia, called the project "Much more than just a tram."
"This project is truly unique because it combines sustainability, passenger convenience, and environmental immersion in a region full of history and wonder," said Mohamed Khalil.
The tram route is scheduled to open in the second half of 2027 as part of the 360 Mobility sustainable transport plan.
