In Oregon, one of the largest aircraft hangars in the world is located: why it is there and what it is used for
If you've ever driven through western Oregon, chances are you've passed by Tillamook. But it's not just the cheese company that made this place famous - the historic air museum here preserves an important part of American history.
It is home to one of the largest airplane hangars in the world, as reported by NewsTalk KIT.
Why is there a huge hangar in Oregon?
The enormous hangar near Tillamook, Oregon, was constructed to accommodate airships for submarine hunting.
During World War II, the United States Navy built 17 massive wooden hangars to house K-class airships. These airships were utilized by the Navy to patrol the sea in search of enemy submarines and to escort convoys of ships during crossings. Two of these massive wooden structures were erected at Tillamook Air Force Station (NAS). The air station in Oregon was established to safeguard and serve the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and California.
After a proud legacy of protecting the West Coast during World War II, NAS Tillamook was decommissioned in 1948 following Japan's surrender.
The enormous hangar can still be seen at the Tillamook Air Museum in Oregon.
