The first voyage of the Icon of the Seas: the world's largest cruise liner has arrived in the Caribbean basin
After a transatlantic journey from the Spanish port of Algeciras on December 23, the world's largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, arrived off the coast of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The liner is expected to reach Miami on January 9, and on January 27, it will welcome guests and embark on its highly anticipated inaugural voyage.
Cruise Hive reported that in Ponce, the ship will take on new crew members, while shipyard workers will disembark and return home after completing final organizational tasks. It is noted that the vessel will undergo inspections by the US Coast Guard and other regulatory authorities.
According to Royal Caribbean International CEO and President Michael Bailey, the ship is awaiting the arrival of a mysterious guest whose name has not been disclosed.
"The next few days will involve numerous inspections, equipment loading and unloading, shipyard workers departing, additional crew members arriving, and a very special guest. Preparations are progressing well for our arrival in Miami on January 9, where we will host the ICON's arrival celebration," said Michael Bailey.
Although the identity of the mystery person remains undisclosed, speculation suggests it could be soccer legend Lionel Messi, who is likely to preside over the naming ceremony on January 23.
What to expect during Icon of the Seas' maiden voyage
Prior to its inaugural cruise in the Eastern and Western Caribbean on January 27, the ship will conduct a series of trial cruises with media representatives and travel agents on board. This is aimed at testing all the guest functions of the ship. It is noted that the initial guests, totaling approximately 5,610 people, will have the opportunity to visit destinations such as St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and Perfect Day at CocoCay. Following this voyage, the cruise will journey to the eastern and western Caribbean, stopping at Costa Maya, Cozumel Island, and St. Maarten.
Overall, the Icon of the Seas has become the most anticipated cruise ship, capable of changing the game. It took Royal Caribbean International more than 7 years and an additional 900 days to design and develop a cruise ship with a gross tonnage of 250,800 tons.
This innovative ship will offer its guests 7 swimming pools, 6 unique water slides on Thrill Island and Splashaway, 20 restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, and an amazing aqua show featuring the highest waterfall at sea.
