Free parking and taxi discount in Dubai: who can benefit
The transportation system in Dubai is impressive for its modernity and efficiency, including high-tech subways, exclusive taxis, and innovative buses. However, despite all the amenities, transportation costs in Dubai can be quite high.
Local transportation companies offer some nice deals to help keep fares from affecting your budget while traveling. Zawya explains how to save money on taxi rides in Dubai and obtain a free parking permit.
Representatives from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the Dubai Taxi Company (DTC) discussed how travelers can obtain special permits and reduce their travel expenses. They made their statements at the International Conference on Accessible Travel and Tourism.
Osama Al Safi, director of the RTA's parking department and chairman of the friendly organization for People of Determination (PoD), mentioned that PoD tourists can use public parking in Dubai for free, similar to the privilege granted to elderly Emirati and PoD residents.
These are tourists with special needs (PoDs) who can use free public parking throughout Dubai for up to three months. They can also obtain special permits that entitle them to a 50 percent discount on taxi fares.
How to apply for free parking
This can be done through the RTA website or app, or in person at any RTA customer service center. It is noted that since August of last year, the RTA has digitized the process of issuing free parking permits, eliminating the need for PoD individuals to print and display permits.
It's worth mentioning that PoD tourists can obtain a temporary parking permit for up to three months for each application.
Obtaining a taxi discount
According to Abdullah Ibrahim Al Meyer, acting director of business transformation at DTC, PoD tourists can receive a 50% discount on taxi fares.
To do so, they simply need to apply for a Sanad card, a smart card issued by the Community Development Authority (CDA) for PoD residents and tourists.
It is worth noting that this is the first time DTC, one of the largest taxi operators in Dubai, has announced a taxi fare discount. The company was founded in 1995 and holds about 44% of the taxi market share in Dubai.
Previously, preferential rates were offered for wheelchair users. Currently, people with disabilities can order regular taxis through the DTC app (if they do not have mobility impairments) and enjoy a reduced rate.
How to obtain a Sanad card
To obtain a card, individuals need to apply online. According to the Community Development Authority (CDA) website, the validity of Sanad cards for PoD tourists depends on the duration of their visit.
To apply, they need to provide an electronic copy of a visitor visa issued by Dubai, a copy of their passport, an electronic copy of a medical report or disability card from their home country, and a recent photo.
