Dubai to ban single-use bags in all retail outlets: Exceptions and the amount of fines
Dubai is introducing a ban on single-use bags, which will come into effect on June 1, 2024. This applies to both plastic and paper bags in all retail outlets in the city.
The purpose of the innovation is to reduce environmental pollution and encourage the use of reusable alternatives. According to the Khaleejtimes, Dubai already has a fee for disposable plastic bags, namely 25 dirhams.
From June 1, stores will be prohibited from offering free disposable bags. Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags.
The ban also applies to biodegradable bags as they require special conditions for recycling.
Exceptions to the rule:
- bread bags
- bags for products packaged online
- trash can bags
- bags for packing vegetables, meat, fish and chicken
- bags for laundry
- bags for electronic devices
- garbage bags
- sacks for grain
Violation of the rule is punishable by a fine:
- AED 200 for the first offense.
- AED 400 for the second offense.
- The maximum fine can reach AED 2,000.
