Cyprus experiences a decline in tourism: analysis of January indicators for the year 2024
Since 2021, the popular Mediterranean resort of Cyprus has experienced a decline in the number of tourists in January. The same trend was observed in January 2024, marking another instance in the ongoing decrease in tourist numbers.
According to the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), 87,961 tourists were recorded in January 2024, compared to 90,549 in January 2023, which reflects a decrease of 2.9% from the previous year. This information is stated in the CyprusMail article.
Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom, Poland, and Greece continue to contribute significantly to the tourism sector in Cyprus, comprising 18.6%, 18.2%, and 11.8% of the total number of travelers, respectively.
The survey indicates that vacation remains the primary reason for visiting Cyprus, accounting for 60.8% of tourists in January 2024, followed by trips to visit friends or relatives (21.2%) and business purposes (17.2%).
Additionally, statistics reveal that the number of Cypriots returning from foreign trips amounted to 153,499 people, representing a 12.3% increase from the previous year (136,717). Among the main countries of return, Greece accounted for the largest share at 30.5% (46,837), followed by the United Kingdom at 11.9% (18,334), Poland at 4.3% (6,525), and Russia at 4.1% (6,241).
Furthermore, it is noteworthy that in terms of the purpose of the trip, the majority of residents (85.7%) traveled for leisure, 11.7% for business, 1.6% for study, and 1% for other purposes.
