Curfew for teenagers: the Australian city took a decisive step due to vandalism among young people
The Australian city of Alice Springs has introduced a curfew for teenagers. This happened after the funeral of an 18-year-old boy, during which attendees began breaking the windows and doors of a local pub.
The horrific incident and subsequent clashes involving 150 armed men forced officials to take decisive action. According to CNN, the nighttime movement restrictions will affect children under 18.
Chief Minister Eve Lawler imposed a two-week curfew from 18:00 to 6:00 in the central business district. She emphasized that this is a necessary step to protect children, as the streets have become dangerous.
"If anyone under the age of 18 is seen in the city center, they will be taken home or to a safe place. It is not safe for children on the streets," said Eve Lawler.
Although there have been fewer acts of vandalism, controversy over the curfew continues. Some consider its introduction a hasty reaction to social problems.
The community was outraged by a tragic car accident that killed an 18-year-old boy almost a month ago. According to reports, he fell out of a stolen car, leading to his death. Outraged teenagers seem to be seeking revenge on those responsible for the accident, as witnesses have fled the scene.
Some activists have welcomed the curfew move, while others believe that young people need support, not more control.
As TravelWise previously reported, many tourists come to Australia in the spring, when the summer heat subsides, and the country hosts many colorful festivals and cultural events.
