Cheddar Gorge named one of the most "unforgettable" natural attractions in the UK
The iconic Somerset landscape has been named the seventh most "unforgettable" natural attraction in the UK in a new list. The Cheddar Gorge and the caves in the Mendip Hills were included in the list alongside such breathtaking sights as the Giant's Causeway and Loch Ness.
The list was compiled by calculating the percentage of reviews that contained the words "unforgettable" or "memorable," with 0.42% of reviews of Cheddar Gorge containing one or both of these words. This information was published by somersetlive.co.
Michael Edwards, managing director of Explore Worldwide, said: "Our research into the world's most unforgettable sights highlights just how many natural wonders exist on our Earth that are worth exploring. At Explore, we're committed to creating unforgettable travel experiences, and we were interested to learn what feedback data can tell us about where travelers are finding those truly special, completely unforgettable travel moments. We hope that our research will serve as a reminder to everyone that these attractions are not just dots on a map, but unforgettable memories for those who are lucky enough to visit them."
Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania was recognized as the most unforgettable natural attraction in the world, with 11% of reviews containing magical words. Cheddar Gorge, located near the village of Cheddar, is known for its stunning cliff views and fascinating cave system.
It remains a popular destination for tourists, including cavers, nature lovers, and even quest enthusiasts. A particularly well-known part of Cheddar Gorge is the 500,000-year-old Gough Cave, where the oldest complete human skeleton was found in 1903.
The Cheddar man, estimated to be about 9000 years old, is now kept in the Natural History Museum in London. Other famous inhabitants of Gough Cave include our 14,700-year-old ancestors, who some believe were cannibals!
Cheddar Gorge and the caves are open most days from 10:00 to 17:00. A day ticket costs £22.95 for adults and £17.20 for children.
