Cathay Cargo Terminal Spearheads Digital Transformation in Hong Kong's Air Freight Industry
Cathay Cargo Terminal has reached a significant milestone in the air cargo industry by launching the Electronic Shipment Release Forms (eSRF), establishing itself as the first cargo terminal operator in Hong Kong to implement a fully digitalized import collection process. This innovation, which is a part of the Import Air Cargo Collection Digitalization Module, is powered by the HKIA Cargo Data Platform of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK).
The eSRF system revolutionizes the import collection process by enhancing efficiency and flexibility for freight forwarders. This digital approach not only provides a more secure method compared to traditional paper/manual identification but also offers greater visibility for customers. A notable environmental benefit is the elimination of paper-based Shipment Release Forms (SRF), leading to reduced archiving storage needs and contributing to sustainability efforts.
Previously, the process to obtain SRFs involved manual, paper-based identification and queuing for cargo clearance. The eSRF, however, enables electronic authentication, allowing airlines to issue these forms to freight forwarders or consignees. This advancement facilitates pre-registration, automatic truck dock allocation, and online queuing for cargo clearance, with inspection confirmations recorded electronically. This process culminates in a cargo release confirmation displayed on mobile devices, streamlining the entire procedure.
Cathay Cargo Terminal, in collaboration with AAHK and other industry stakeholders like the Hong Kong Association of Freight Forwarding and Logistics (HAFFA), airlines, cargo agents, truckers, and regulators, has been instrumental in developing this solution. Mark Watts, Chief Operating Officer of Cathay Cargo Terminal, highlighted the significance of eSRF, comparing its impact to the introduction of e-tickets in passenger aviation. He emphasized the growing demand for digital solutions that enhance efficiency, transparency, and data sharing in the supply chain with minimal integration effort.
The HKIA Cargo Data Platform, managed by AAHK, is a groundbreaking community-based digital platform that employs blockchain technology. It serves as a crucial link connecting various stakeholders in the air cargo industry, enabling digitalization, innovation, and global trade facilitation. This platform is a driving force behind the transformation of Hong Kong’s air cargo industry.
Watts further commented on the eSRF's role in reinforcing Cathay Cargo Terminal's position as a digital leader in the cargo terminal sector. He stressed that this advancement not only strengthens Hong Kong International Airport's status as a premier international aviation hub but also aligns with their vision of being the world’s most customer-centric cargo terminal. This development marks a pivotal step towards modernizing the air freight industry and enhancing Hong Kong's global competitiveness in this domain.
