Carnival Corporation Introduces Solar Park at Amber Cove Port
Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise company, has taken a significant step towards sustainability with the inauguration of a new solar park at its Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic.
The recently unveiled solar park, featuring over 1,800 solar panels, is poised to meet 80 percent of the port's energy requirements. This move underscores Carnival Corporation's dedication to reducing its environmental footprint while simultaneously promoting tourism.
The transition to solar energy marks a significant shift in the port's energy sourcing strategy, reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and subsequently curbing greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that the solar park will mitigate approximately 1,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, equivalent to planting over 30,000 trees.
At a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by government officials, industry leaders, and local dignitaries, including Joel Santos, the Dominican Republic's Minister of the Presidency, and Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, the importance of this initiative was emphasized.
Christine Duffy emphasized the corporation's commitment to environmental stewardship, stating, "As we bring guests to enjoy the beauty and rich culture of the Dominican Republic, we also take our environmental stewardship here and everywhere we visit very seriously."
Joel Santos, echoing this sentiment, hailed the project as a milestone achievement for Amber Cove, making it the first cruise terminal in the country to embark on such a large-scale renewable energy project. He noted, "This project will undoubtedly contribute to the production of clean energy and environmental sustainability in Puerto Plata, the first tourist destination in the Dominican Republic."
Located along the picturesque north coast of the Dominican Republic near Puerto Plata, Amber Cove Cruise Center offers a range of attractions, including restaurants, shops, bars, and recreational activities such as ziplining and snorkeling. The port, spanning 25 acres, is one of eight premier destinations owned and operated by Carnival Corporation.
This initiative aligns with Carnival Corporation's broader commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism practices. By prioritizing renewable energy sources, the corporation aims to set a precedent for environmentally conscious operations within the cruise industry.
