California's only free camping site to be banned soon
In California's Big Sur region, free camping is to be banned on San Carpoforo Creek beach. This decision was made by a vote of the California Coastal Commission to facilitate the work of the local Forest Service.
Thus, the popular overnight camping spot along Highway 1 will be off-limits for 2 years. This was reported by Yahoo Life.
The California Coastal Commission said that the ban is necessary for the US Forest Service, which must "address several new visitor management issues and concerns about sensitive species and habitats" to prevent the threat of their disappearance or extinction.
During the ban, which will begin in April 2024, visitors are not allowed to camp at night. However, during the day, pet owners will be able to walk their pets on the coast on leashes.
