Snacks at the airport - a scam? An expert tells the truth
When it comes to international travel, air travel is the most expensive aspect. Additionally, airports are where tourists often spend the most money: on parking, food, and lounge areas. On average, travelers spend $140 in airports. However, airports employ a larger strategy to generate revenue.
Financial expert George Camel discusses the significant markups on various services and offers tips on how travelers can save money. He shares this advice in his TikTok videos.
In one of his videos, George compares the prices of snacks and coffee at airports to those in regular stores. For instance, a frappuccino costs $6.75 at the airport, whereas it can be purchased at other coffee shops for $3.69. Similarly, a bag of pistachios costs $20 at the airport but only $5 in a typical store.
Thus, snack prices at airports are over 100% higher than the usual prices in an average grocery store. Despite these prices, people continue to make purchases while at airports.
The Port Authority, the agency responsible for overseeing many tourist hubs in New York and New Jersey, such as JFK, released a "vendor policy manual" in May 2022 aimed at combating overpricing and extreme markups on snacks, airport meals, and beverages. Since the new policy came into effect, vendors are urged not to raise food and beverage prices by more than "10% of street prices" and are encouraged to offer more affordable options for travelers.
To assist travelers in saving money, JFK has launched a website where they can find budget-friendly options for essentials like food and water.
Reasons for the price increase
This increase is not without reason, as research explains. High turnover, rents, and rigorous security checks contribute partly to the exorbitant markups on airport snacks. Additionally, there is increased staff turnover. Employees who remain must factor in the extra time and money required for parking, going through security, and often working long shifts.
Life hacks to help you save money
TikToker Rachel @rachandlaurexplore shared a few tips she uses. The first is to utilize public transportation. Instead of spending money on gas and airport parking, a cheaper alternative is to take a train or bus to the airport.
She also says she often takes food with her, as well as her reusable water bottle. Parking, airport snacks, and water are the three biggest expenses for travelers that can be avoided by spending a little time in advance.
