An American woman explained when it's useful to lie while traveling
Rebecca Tribelhorn, a well-known travel photographer from the United States who has traveled to 40 countries, from Ireland to Mexico, shared her tips on how to protect yourself while traveling. Her Instagram post has received over 1000 likes, where she talked about her methods of protection.
"Always trust your instincts and tell a lie if you have to," the travel photographer warned. She says that for solo travelers, she recommends lying and saying that you are meeting a friend, family, or partner, as reported by DailyStar.
The reason for this common lie is quite simple, because when a woman travels alone, it can sometimes be misinterpreted that she is actively looking for a boyfriend/partner. Some people really don't understand that you like to travel alone and/or just like to be alone, and just take your being alone as an open invitation, she explained.
According to the traveler, saying that you have a boyfriend/partner/husband is a much more effective way to be left alone. She even recommends wearing a fake wedding ring, regardless of whether you are married or not.
But that's not the only lie the single traveler recommends women use when traveling the world. She recommends never disclosing information about your accommodation to protect yourself and your valuables.
"Especially for women, it's very important to have a place to come back to where you feel safe. I tell strangers that I have been to this place before to create a false impression of confidence and knowledge. When you travel, there is a risk of being scammed, and people who would like to take advantage of you like to know that you are not familiar with their tricks and will play into their scheme," she warns.
The traveler says her most effective lie is even simpler. She recommends simply pretending that you cannot speak or do not understand English. According to her, this is the perfect way to interrupt an unwanted acquaintance.
"In my experience, most of the people you meet while traveling the world are good people. The lie I recommend helps protect you from maybe a 10% chance of something bad happening," Rebecca added.
