Amsterdam's Red Light District to be relocated
Amsterdam is facing a problem of oversaturation with tourists. The authorities have introduced a number of measures aimed at reducing the city's attractiveness to tourists and improving the quality of life for locals. These measures include a ban on cruise ships, restrictions on tourist buses in the center, a ban on public smoking of marijuana in the Red Light District, an increase in tourist tax, and the "Stay Away" campaign.
In the context of these changes, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema proposed in a letter to the city council to create a multi-storey erotic center on the Europe Boulevard in the south of the city (Zuid district), the Daily Mail reports.
Halsema, who has long criticized the Red Light District, sees it as a way to change the face of De Wallen, a historic neighborhood that has been associated with prostitution from the beginning. The "window" prostitution that emerged in the early 20th century made the area famous, attracting many tourists.
The Europa Boulevard, located on the outskirts of Amsterdam's main business district, was one of three options for creating an erotic center. It will have 100 rooms for sex workers, as well as sex theaters, clubs, and restaurants.
