Airbus and TotalEnergies Forge Alliance for Greener Skies with Sustainable Aviation Fuels
In an ambitious move to combat climate change, Airbus and TotalEnergies have solidified a strategic partnership, signaling a significant stride towards the aviation sector's goal of net carbon neutrality by 2050. Announced recently, this collaboration underlines the critical role of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in curtailing CO2 emissions, aiming to revolutionize the industry through a dual approach.
The partnership is set to revolutionize the industry through two primary initiatives: TotalEnergies' commitment to supplying over half of Airbus' SAF needs in Europe and a comprehensive research and innovation program. This program aims to develop 100% sustainable fuels compatible with both current and future aircraft designs, further investigating SAF's impact on CO2 emissions and non-CO2 effects like contrails.
This alliance builds on a history of collaboration between the two giants, with TotalEnergies having supplied SAF for Airbus' aircraft deliveries in Toulouse since 2016. Noteworthy milestones include the first long-haul flight using SAF on an A350 from Paris to Montreal in May 2021, the inaugural flight of a H225 helicopter on 100% SAF, and the groundbreaking A321neo flight with 100% SAF in March 2023.
Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies, emphasized the company's dedication to the aviation sector's transition towards a lower carbon footprint. With a goal of producing 1.5 million tons of SAF annually by 2030, TotalEnergies is at the forefront of sustainable fuel development.
Guillaume Faury, Airbus CEO, highlighted the urgency of deploying SAF to meet the 2030 carbon emission reduction targets. This partnership symbolizes the aerospace and energy sectors' joint commitment to environmental sustainability, ensuring the aviation industry's continued contribution to global society.
TotalEnergies, a global multi-energy producer, stands as a beacon of innovation in the energy sector, championing affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy solutions. With operations in nearly 130 countries and a workforce of over 100,000, the company is dedicated to contributing positively to societal well-being through sustainable development.
This groundbreaking partnership between Airbus and TotalEnergies not only underscores the aviation industry's commitment to a greener future but also sets a benchmark for cross-industry collaborations aimed at achieving global sustainability goals.
