AirAsia Unveils Direct Flight from Kota Kinabalu to Seoul, Strengthening Tourism and Cultural Ties
In a significant leap forward for regional connectivity, AirAsia Malaysia announced the commencement of its first direct flight connecting Kota Kinabalu, its burgeoning hub in Malaysia, to Seoul, South Korea. The inaugural flight, marked by a 100 percent passenger load, symbolizes not just a milestone for the airline but also a bridge between diverse cultures and economies.
Launched on 4 March 2024, the daily service is a testament to AirAsia's expanding footprint in Sabah, elevating the total to 18 routes with 282 weekly flights to and from Kota Kinabalu. This enhancement in air travel accessibility underscores a broader strategy to fortify Kota Kinabalu as a pivotal aviation hub, now boasting an impressive array of nine domestic and nine international destinations.
The addition of the Kota Kinabalu-Seoul route opens a gateway for Sabahans and South Koreans alike to immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestries, iconic landmarks, and diverse culinary landscapes of each other's territories. Attractions like Gyeongbokgung Palace, Lotte World Tower, and Mangwon Market are now just a flight away, promising to enrich the travel experience with memorable adventures.
AirAsia's inaugural flight was celebrated with zest, featuring a collaboration with Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO), marked by mascot appearances and merchandise giveaways, illustrating the festive spirit and mutual enthusiasm for this new journey.
Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group Limited, expressed optimism about the route, noting the impressive 150,000 arrivals from South Korea to Sabah in 2023. Lingam anticipates this figure to surge as the airline enhances its presence in East Malaysia. The new service is poised to amplify tourism, trade, and the cultural synergy between South Korea and Sabah, aligning with the vision of both regions as key players in the global tourism and economic sectors.
In light of the inaugural flight, AirAsia is rolling out special promotional fares to encourage exploration and discovery between these two vibrant destinations. This promotional offer is a call to adventure for Sabahans eager to explore Seoul's rich heritage and contemporary allure, underlining AirAsia's commitment to making travel more accessible and enjoyable.
Moreover, KTO's role in promoting Korea as a prime holiday destination among Malaysians, through various consumer-oriented and industry collaborations, complements this new air link, further facilitating cultural exchange and understanding between the two countries.
