A boat with migrants hits rocks in Greece: 30 people rescued, 2 killed
A boat carrying migrants hit rocks in Greece. The Coast Guard rescued 30 people, but two died due to the disaster: a woman and a man.
Local authorities reported that strong wind gusts caused the boat to become uncontrollable. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 10, the Associated Press reports.
Two migrants died near the resort town of Thermi on the island of Lesvos. Rescuers found most of the passengers in a remote area on land near the crash site.
It is alleged that they wanted to get to the nearest city on their own.
According to the victims, there were about 36 people on board, and some of them jumped into the sea. The coast guard and police continue to search for possible missing persons, but it is impossible to say for sure whether they exist at all.
"The coast guard and police were searching for more people on the shore in the bad weather conditions," the official said.
Some other ferries off the Greek coast were also reportedly damaged by strong winds.
