Cyclists will be obliged to have insurance and number plates in Italy
Cyclists in Italy will be required to have licence plates, signage, insurance and wear helmets. These measures are aimed at reducing fatal road accidents.
The relevant statement was made by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport of Italy Matteo Salvini. It was reported by Sky News.
Salvini spoke about the bill that provides for changes for cyclists. The new provisions, if adopted, will be included in the Italian traffic code.
He also argued the changes with real-life examples of fatal road accidents. According to his data, 3210 deaths were recorded during the year, which is a shame for a civilised country.
Changes are likely to be introduced for car drivers as well. In particular, driving under the influence of drugs will result in a permanent driver's licence revocation.
Salvini's idea was met with criticism in society, as the minister himself had not previously supported such changes. In addition, the media stressed that no other European country has such requirements for cyclists.
