Thanks to the world-class harbour and yacht marina in Porto Cervo, as well as the white sandy beaches and clear blue waters surrounding the perimeter of the island, Sardinia has become one of Italy’s most popular destinations.

You don’t need to be a millionaire to enjoy the high-flyer’s lifestyle on this island either. Although it has a feel of Monaco or Monte Carlo, Sardinia is actually just as accessible as Ibiza (Spain) or Corfu (Greece).

The island’s main attraction, Porto Cervo, was designed by the Aga Khan in the 1960s and it was this port that put Sardinia firmly on the map, soon becoming a playground for the rich and famous.

Where to stay

Just half an hour outside Porto Cervo is the city of Olbia. Here, you will be able to find trendy four and five star hotels for less than £50 a night. Why pay high prices for luxury when you can enjoy the same thing on a shoestring budget?

Some of the best cheap hotels are:

• Hotel Centrale• Hotel For You• Mercure Olbia Hermaea

Things to do

You might be enjoying your holiday in the company of millionaires, but that doesn’t mean your trip is restricted to yachting and popping champagne in fancy bars; Sardinia has plenty to keep you entertained on a tighter budget.

The Museo della Brigata Sassari proudly shows off Sassari’s military heritage. You will see what they endured in the First World War, from their uniforms to photographs and other memorabilia from the time. If you want to learn a little about the local history, this museum is well worth a visit.

Shopaholics should visit any of the big towns on the island for a cultural experience at one of the markets. Shop like the locals, soak up the atmosphere and get your hands on some of the local produce, from freshly picked fruit and vegetables to the morning’s catch.

Elsewhere on the island is Grotta di Nettuno, you’ll find a cave featuring some spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. You’ll descend down over 650 steps to reach the bottom of the 100m sheer cliff face and the entrance to the cave.

Experience a relaxing break away from the stress of daily life; indulge in pure luxury and save your cash by looking at holidays to Sardinia. This Italian island is the perfect destination if you want to rub shoulders with the rich and famous, so what are you waiting for?
