China Eastern Airlines has started a direct flight between Xi’an and Vienna, creating the first non-stop link between north-west China and Austria. The first service departed on 20 April 2026 with 246 passengers on board. The route links Xi’an, a starting point of the historic Silk Road, with Vienna, known for its strong cultural and music heritage.

Flights run three times a week on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Departure from Xi’an is at 01:30, with arrival in Vienna at 06:10 local time after roughly 10 hours and 40 minutes in the air. The return service leaves Vienna at 13:30 and arrives back in Xi’an the next morning. It offers a direct overnight option in both directions.

Flights are operated by an Airbus A330, configured with 263 seats, including 18 in business class and 245 in economy. The airline positions the route as part of its wider international network through Xi’an, which now includes 16 international routes linking the city with 14 destinations worldwide, strengthening its long-haul connections.

Route Details and Schedule

  • Three weekly flights (Monday, Thursday, Saturday)
  • Flight time: approximately 10 hours 40 minutes
  • Airbus A330 with 263 seats
  • First direct link between north-west China and Austria

A direct link between Xi’an and Vienna makes it easier to reach central European cities through Vienna, while also opening access to Xi’an as a starting point for travel across China. Visitors can explore historic sites connected to the ancient Silk Road routes, while Vienna offers access to neighbouring destinations such as Budapest, Prague and other cities within the Schengen area.

The new route adds another long-distance option between Asia and Europe. Flying direct saves time and removes the need to change planes along the way. As Xi’an builds its international network, it gives people another place to start or end their journey, instead of relying only on larger and often more crowded airports.
