Winter travel across Europe often becomes simpler when ski resorts sit close to major airports. Several well-known alpine regions combine reliable snow, varied terrain and short transfer times, making them practical options for short breaks or last-minute trips. Northern Italy, western Austria, Switzerland and parts of France continue to attract winter visitors thanks to compact resort layouts, frequent flights and a balance between active skiing and relaxed mountain life.

Northern Italy and the Innsbruck Region

Close links to Milan and Innsbruck airports open access to smaller, less crowded resorts alongside famous high-altitude areas. In northern Italy, Montecampione offers a quieter atmosphere with gentle slopes, while Alagna sits higher in the Alps and appeals to confident skiers and freeride fans. Around Innsbruck, the following resorts stand out:

  • Stubai Glacier – extensive pistes and year-round snow
  • Bergeralm – family-friendly slopes and off-slope activities
  • Salzburg Area and Swiss Alpine Options

Salzburg and Zürich airports place travellers within easy reach of some of the Alps’ most established resorts. Near Salzburg, Kitzbühel combines large ski areas with events, spas and a lively town centre, while Obertauern focuses on sport and high-altitude snow reliability. From Zürich, two contrasting options are popular:

  • Grindelwald and Wengen – classic alpine scenery and long descents
  • Andermatt – central Switzerland’s largest ski area with varied winter sports

Beyond skiing, these locations open access to winter hiking routes, panoramic viewpoints and historic alpine villages that remain lively throughout the colder months. Resorts close to Zürich and Salzburg make it simple to combine time on the slopes with city strolls, museums or walks by the lake. Short transfer times make it easier to change plans on the go, whether that means skiing one day and taking a slower day afterwards to wander through nearby towns, relax in thermal baths or visit local cultural landmarks at an unhurried pace.

Access to major airports plays a clear role in how people plan winter trips across Europe. Resorts that can be reached quickly after landing make travel easier to organise and reduce the risk of delays, even at busy times of the season. Many of these places combine consistent snow, strong mountain views and simple logistics. As winter travel increases, resorts with good connections and distinct local character remain dependable options for alpine breaks.
