WestJet and TELUS: Free Starlink Wi-Fi on Board Starting in 2024
Important news for travelers: WestJet and telecommunications company TELUS have announced a new partnership that will bring free, high-speed internet on board all WestJet aircraft. This significant upgrade will be available starting in December 2024.
Partnerships of this kind are already being actively implemented in other parts of the world. For example, Delta Air Lines signed an agreement with Viasat in early 2023, providing its passengers with high-speed internet on board. JetBlue Airways has also been offering free Wi-Fi through Fly-Fi for several years, allowing passengers to stay connected on all flights.
Internet access will be free for all members of the WestJet Rewards loyalty program. Zainul Mawji, Executive Vice President of TELUS, noted that this is just the first step in a long-term partnership that will bring additional benefits and perks for both WestJet Rewards members and TELUS customers.
Technical Aspects and Timeline
The system, based on Starlink technology, will be installed on WestJet's narrow-body aircraft by the end of 2025. The modernization of wide-body aircraft is planned to be completed by the end of 2026. Jason Fritch from SpaceX emphasized that with more than 1,000 aircraft already equipped with Starlink worldwide, this solution represents a significant step forward in the future of aviation connectivity.
