Passengers traveling between Dewsbury and York should prepare for service disruptions during October and November due to extensive engineering work as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). The multi-billion-pound initiative is designed to upgrade the railway, increase capacity, and deliver quicker, more dependable services. Travelers are encouraged to check schedules before departing, with some services diverted and buses operating at affected stations.

From 6 October to 24 October, excluding weekends, a range of engineering work will be carried out at Batley and Dewsbury stations, as well as along nearby track sections. The main works planned are:

  • Extending platforms at Batley (150m) and Dewsbury (200m) to accommodate longer trains with more seating.
  • Bridge reconstruction work along the line.
  • Replacing and maintaining tracks and drainage to ensure more dependable services.
  • Installing foundations for overhead line equipment (OLE) masts between Morley and Leeds to support future electrification.
  • Supporting the ongoing electrification of the route, which now covers 25% of the Transpennine line following the introduction of electric services between York and Church Fenton.
“Our teams will be working around the clock to deliver this safely and on time, following important milestone for the programme at Huddersfield station. We’d like to thank local businesses, residents and customers for their understanding as we complete these upgrades."
Jonathan Hepton, project sponsor for TRU

Travelers aiming to visit local attractions should be aware of temporary access difficulties. For example, hiking along the Spen Valley Greenway near Dewsbury may require extra travel time due to replacement buses. Visitors planning to explore Almondbury Moor close to Huddersfield could face altered connections between stations. Those intending to use the Calder Valley Trail may also experience delays or more complicated transfers, making careful planning essential for reaching these outdoor destinations.

Additional weekend works between Leeds, York, and Selby will impact access to several popular areas. Travelers heading to the Barrowby Lane footbridge in Garforth may experience delays and will need to follow replacement bus routes. Hikers along Crawshaw Woods trail should anticipate temporary closures and detours. Likewise, people heading toward walking routes along the River Aire floodplain near Castleford may encounter delays due to train diversions and local replacement buses. These adjustments emphasize the importance of planning ahead during the autumn upgrade period.

Despite short-term disruptions, the upgrades will provide long-term benefits for passengers. Longer platforms, refurbished bridges, and updated tracks will provide additional seating, quicker journeys, and more dependable services. The electrification work will support cleaner, more efficient train services, and weekend upgrades on the Leeds, York, and Selby route will improve access for both local and longer-distance travelers. Passengers should check schedules ahead of travel and seek guidance from station staff to manage these temporary disruptions.
