West Yorkshire Rail Work Set to Disrupt Autumn Travel Plans
Passengers traveling between Dewsbury and York should prepare for service disruptions during October and November due to extensive engineering work as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). The multi-billion-pound initiative is designed to upgrade the railway, increase capacity, and deliver quicker, more dependable services. Travelers are encouraged to check schedules before departing, with some services diverted and buses operating at affected stations.
From 6 October to 24 October, excluding weekends, a range of engineering work will be carried out at Batley and Dewsbury stations, as well as along nearby track sections. The main works planned are:
- Extending platforms at Batley (150m) and Dewsbury (200m) to accommodate longer trains with more seating.
- Bridge reconstruction work along the line.
- Replacing and maintaining tracks and drainage to ensure more dependable services.
- Installing foundations for overhead line equipment (OLE) masts between Morley and Leeds to support future electrification.
- Supporting the ongoing electrification of the route, which now covers 25% of the Transpennine line following the introduction of electric services between York and Church Fenton.
