US Airports with Longest Flight Delays: A Recent Study Reveals

According to travelandleisure.com has pinpointed the U.S. airports where travelers are most likely to face significant delays. The study, which assessed data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, evaluated nearly two million delayed flights from January 2023 through February 2024.

Provo Airport (PVU) in Utah emerged as the leader in average delay time per flight, an undesirable title as flights here were delayed by an average of 1 hour, 42 minutes, and 31 seconds. Remarkably, 39.74 percent of flights at PVU experienced delays, the highest percentage among the airports studied.

Not far behind, Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) in Florida ranked second. Here, flights typically faced delays of 1 hour, 34 minutes, and 53 seconds. A total of 9,847 flights landed at SFB during the study period, with 28.09 percent experiencing significant delays.

The third spot was taken by Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in Texas, with an average delay of 1 hour, 29 minutes, and 12 seconds. DFW recorded the highest number of late arrivals, with 21.41 percent of its 308,806 flights delayed.

The study also highlighted other airports with notable delays. Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) and Philadelphia International (PHL) ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, for delay durations, while John F. Kennedy (JFK) in New York and several Florida airports rounded out the top ten.

This comprehensive study highlights the need for travelers to anticipate delays at these heavily affected U.S. airports. Planning for extra travel time or exploring alternative routes could be wise strategies to mitigate the inconvenience.
