In a recent statement at the UN Security Council, UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward highlighted the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, emphasizing the critical need for increased aid and access for humanitarian agencies. The meeting, focused on the ongoing responsibilities of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), shed light on the severe conditions facing the people of Gaza, including an imminent risk of famine.

Ambassador Woodward outlined the UK's stance on three significant points. Firstly, the necessity of UNRWA's operations in facilitating aid distribution in Gaza was stressed, with a call to Israel to ensure unrestricted access for all humanitarian efforts, especially in northern Gaza. This region, heavily reliant on UNRWA’s aid, is critical for distributing resources to those most in need.

Moreover, the Ambassador acknowledged UNRWA's pivotal role beyond Gaza, highlighting its support for nearly 4 million Palestinians across Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. This support is deemed essential not only for humanitarian relief but also for maintaining regional stability during such precarious times.

Lastly, Woodward expressed concern over allegations of misconduct by some UNRWA staff linked to incidents on October 7, stressing the importance of ongoing investigations and organizational reforms within UNRWA to ensure neutrality and efficiency.

The UK has pledged to reassess its funding strategies following the outcome of a review led by former French Foreign Minister Colonna, focusing on UNRWA's processes and adherence to neutrality. This comes as the international community continues to navigate complex diplomatic waters, striving to balance immediate humanitarian needs with long-term stability in the region.
