The Ukrainian research icebreaker Noosphere has reached King George Island in the Antarctic, where the Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station is located. On the way to the island, the Ukrainian icebreaker got caught in a storm in the area of the most violent Drake Passage but managed to avoid it.

During the expedition to the island, the polar explorers of the Vernadsky Research Base saw a huge iceberg, a photo of which was posted on the Facebook page of the National Antarctic Research Centre. It is noted that the crew was surprised by this discovery.

"We saw the icebergs much earlier than in previous years, as early as 58 degrees latitude," said Oleksandr Hryshko, captain of the Noosphere icebreaker.

The station admits that it could have been one of the breakaways of the huge iceberg A23a with an area of 4 thousand square kilometres, which passed the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula in November this year.
