Tunisia Introduces New Tourist Tax

Starting November 1, 2024, Tunisia will implement a new tourist tax for holidaymakers on package deals. Visitors staying in properties rated two stars or higher will face additional nightly charges based on their accommodation type.

The tax will range from 4 to 12 Tunisian Dinars (£1-£3) per night. Tourists in two-star hotels will pay 4 Tunisian Dinars, those in three-star hotels 8 Tunisian Dinars, and those in four or five-star hotels 12 Tunisian Dinars per night. The fee applies for a maximum of 10 nights, potentially adding significant costs to a holiday.

This charge will apply to visitors aged 12 and older, meaning a family of four with teenage children could pay an additional £120 for a two-week stay. Tourists will need to pay the tax in local currency directly to their accommodation providers, as it won't be included in the holiday booking cost.

Earlier this year, Tunisia introduced a similar tax for tourists booking flights and hotels separately, with the same rates. The new tax replaces the existing hotel tax, which was limited to seven nights at a maximum of £1 per night per person. Until the new tax takes effect, the current hotel tax remains applicable.

The Tunisian Government aims to use this tax to ensure foreign visitors contribute their fair share when using subsidized services and products. Tunisia, often referred to as the "budget-friendly St Tropez," is a popular destination known for its sandy beaches, clear waters, and affordable prices. Notable beach resorts include Monastir and Hammamet, offering vibrant nightlife and relaxing beach experiences.

Beyond its beaches, Tunisia offers a variety of activities such as camel trekking, hot air balloon rides, sandboarding, snorkeling, and diving. The seaside village of Sidi Bou Said is a charming destination reminiscent of Greece’s Santorini, offering affordable dining and accommodation with stunning ocean views.
