Transdev Yorkshire is enhancing its FLYER bus network, which connects Leeds, Bradford, and Harrogate with Leeds Bradford Airport, by introducing new hybrid buses equipped with the latest safety and comfort features. The company has invested £4 million in 15 Mercedes-Benz Citaro Hybrid single-deckers, expected to be operational by the end of this year.

These new hybrid buses, among Europe’s most energy-efficient, utilize electric power and biodiesel to minimize emissions. For travelers, this upgrade promises a more environmentally friendly and comfortable journey to the airport.

Leeds Bradford Airport is one of the busiest airports in the UK, serving over four million passengers annually. It offers flights to a wide range of domestic and international destinations, making it a crucial hub for both business and leisure travelers in the Yorkshire region. The airport's importance in connecting the region with major cities worldwide underscores the significance of the FLYER bus network's enhancements.

The new buses will significantly improve the travel experience by incorporating advanced safety technologies such as cyclist and pedestrian detection systems, enhancing road safety for all. Inside, passengers will benefit from free Wi-Fi, USB charging ports, next-stop information displays, two wheelchair bays, and a hearing loop system. Ample luggage space will accommodate the needs of airport travelers.

Transdev’s extensive experience with biodiesel fuels will ensure the new hybrid fleet operates efficiently while reducing emissions. The combination of electric and biodiesel power is expected to save up to 8.5% in fuel consumption compared to conventional buses, translating into annual operating cost savings.

Henri Rohard, Transdev Blazefield Managing Director, emphasized that travelers will appreciate the new buses for their energy efficiency and environmental benefits, offering a sustainable transportation option to the airport.

Adrian Felton, Daimler Bus (UK) Ltd Electro-Mobility Manager for the UK and Ireland, highlighted the collaborative effort with Transdev in developing this eco-friendly solution for a demanding route network. The Citaro hybrid buses, featuring regenerative braking and roof-mounted batteries, will support the low-emission diesel engine, enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

Transdev’s FLYER network, launched in August 2020 in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds Bradford Airport, operates seven days a week, connecting major cities with the airport and integrating with Yorkshire’s bus and train networks. This includes through ticketing from any national rail station and connections with National Express and Megabus coach services, making airport transit more seamless for travelers.

For travelers, the introduction of these hybrid buses means more reliable and frequent services, reducing the stress and hassle of getting to the airport. The improved comfort features ensure a pleasant journey, allowing passengers to stay connected and relaxed before their flights. Additionally, the environmentally friendly aspect of these buses aligns with the growing demand for sustainable travel options, providing peace of mind for eco-conscious passengers.
