Greece has finally completed one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects: the Thessaloniki Metro, a construction journey spanning nearly four decades. Initiated in 1986, the project faced numerous delays, including archaeological discoveries, economic crises, and technical challenges. However, the end result justifies the efforts: Thessaloniki now boasts one of the most modern transportation systems in Europe.

The metro includes 13 stations and covers a route stretching 9.6 kilometers. Its unique features lie in its advanced technology: automated trains, modern platforms, and a strong focus on eco-friendliness. The project cost nearly €3 billion, with part of the funding provided by the European Union, highlighting the significance of the metro not only for Greece but also for the region as a whole.

A Symbol of Progress

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the new metro as a symbol of progress and modernization for both Macedonia and Greece.

This metro is the most modern in Europe, and Thessaloniki deserves it

he stated, emphasizing that the transportation system meets all the standards of comfort and safety, laying the foundation for improving residents' quality of life and boosting tourism.

Impact on Tourism

The opening of the metro in Thessaloniki will greatly enhance the experience for tourists visiting the city. Traveling between landmarks like the White Tower or the Roman Forum will now be faster and more convenient. The automated system will also make travel easier for international visitors by offering multilingual information.

Tips for Travelers

For those planning to visit Thessaloniki, the metro is an ideal way to explore the city. Convenient routes, modern station designs, and accessibility make it an integral part of the city's new identity. Tourists should also note that the system is set to expand further, with new lines connecting key neighborhoods and suburbs in the future.
