Tanzania Flights Could Finally Go Direct
Air Tanzania has revealed plans to launch direct flights between the UK and Tanzania for the first time. The airline wants to start services from London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro International Airport in July 2027. Chief executive Peter Ulanga said the route would operate at least three times a week, with direct flights to Zanzibar also planned.
At present, UK travellers do not have direct flights to Tanzania or Zanzibar, meaning journeys usually involve a stop, often through hubs such as Nairobi. A non-stop service would cut the current travel time, which can range from around 11 to 15 hours depending on the connection. The proposed route would also avoid a major time-zone shift.

Zanzibar could be the biggest draw for holidaymakers, with white-sand beaches, winter temperatures around 30C and resorts along the coast. Popular spots include Nungwi, Paje and Nakupenda, while Stone Town, snorkelling trips and Prison Island’s giant tortoise sanctuary add more to a beach stay. The islands are also only two hours ahead of the UK.
Mainland Tanzania would open up safari and mountain trips with fewer flight changes. Kilimanjaro International Airport sits close to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, while the Serengeti is one of the country’s best-known wildlife areas. If the route launches as planned, Tanzania could become a more practical long-haul option for UK travellers looking for beaches, safari and warm winter weather.
