Heritage steam train services are set to resume across the UK from mid-August through late September 2025. From London, York, and Bristol, travellers can hop on these seasonal day trips that explore charming countryside and historic rail lines.Travellers on these routes get to experience classic steam train rides while exploring seaside villages, rural landscapes, and places rich in history.

The scheduled routes include several notable journeys:

  • The Dorset Coast Express serving Bournemouth or Weymouth
  • The Waverley travelling along the Settle & Carlisle line to Carlisle
  • The Cumbrian Coast Express following the Irish Sea coastline
  • The Royal Duchy running from Bristol to Cornwall

Each service allows passengers several hours at their destination for independent exploration, making these trips well suited for day travellers without overnight stays.

Passengers on the Dorset Coast Express have the opportunity to visit Durdle Door, a striking limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast known for its rugged cliffs and sweeping sea views. Nearby, Bowleaze Cove offers a quieter beach spot with clear waters and walking trails. In Carlisle, travellers have access to Rickerby Park, a riverside green area ideal for walks along the River Eden and local wildlife observation.

The Cumbrian Coast Express route passes close to St Bees Head, an important seabird nesting site with impressive sandstone cliffs. Visitors near Ravenglass have the opportunity to discover the Drigg Sand Dunes, a safeguarded coastal area known for its rich biodiversity. In Cornwall, travellers stopping at Charlestown can enjoy the historic Charlestown Harbour, known for its tall ships and traditional stone quay, providing a glimpse into maritime heritage.

These steam train journeys provide a practical alternative to private car travel, combining sustainability with cultural and natural experiences. The inclusion of extended stops allows visitors to explore less accessible areas efficiently, without the need for overnight accommodation. The comeback of steam train journeys contributes to growing rail tourism and makes it easier to reach a variety of UK destinations, offering travellers more ways to discover the country.
