Spain’s Tourism Boom Contrasts with Holiday Cuts at Home
Spain is preparing for another record summer of international tourism, while almost one in three people living in the country cannot afford a holiday of their own. Around 43 million overseas visitors are expected between June and September 2026, yet Spain’s National Statistics Institute found that 32.2% of residents could not pay for at least one week away from home during 2025.

The OCU says the problem extends beyond travel prices. Housing costs are difficult for 45% of households, food shopping for 42% and energy bills for 36%, while almost half of tenants struggle with rent. With essential expenses taking most of the budget, holidays are often cut first. Even households that do travel are shortening stays, choosing nearby destinations and reducing spending on accommodation and leisure.
The figures also point to another exceptionally busy summer across Spain’s coastal resorts, historic cities and rural destinations. Record arrivals may tighten accommodation and transport availability in the most popular areas, particularly during August and the school holidays. Booking early, checking cancellation conditions and considering smaller towns or inland regions could help visitors avoid the highest prices and the most crowded parts of the country.
Spain’s strong visitor numbers and the holiday choices available to residents measure two different realities. International tourism is bringing more people and spending into the country, while many households still cannot cover a week away after paying essential bills. The issue is not that tourists are taking holidays from Spaniards, but that rising everyday costs leave too little room in family budgets for rest.
