Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has revealed a major aircraft order set to revamp its regional flight operations. The carrier has arranged to get 45 Embraer E195-E2 planes, with plans to possibly increase that number by another 10 down the line. This order is the most significant direct aircraft acquisition for SAS since 1996, supporting its fleet renewal and efficiency objectives. Deliveries are expected to begin in late 2027 and continue over the next four years.

The new Embraer jets are intended to improve service on short- and medium-distance routes across Scandinavia and nearby parts of Europe. They will allow SAS to:

  • Increase flight frequencies
  • Connect smaller cities with limited current air service
  • Offer more direct flights with fewer layovers
  • Improve travel options from the airline’s main hub in Copenhagen

The upgrade to the fleet demonstrates SAS’s approach to meeting new passenger expectations and market developments. The Embraer E195-E2 is more fuel efficient and quieter than older regional jets, offering an enhanced travel experience. With the introduction of these aircraft, passengers may more easily reach notable sites including the Arctic Circle’s Northern Lights viewing spots, the striking fjords along Norway’s coast, and Denmark’s Bornholm Island, famous for its beaches and cliffs.

In addition to operational and environmental improvements, the new jets are expected to support the expansion of SAS’s regional network. Travelers will gain better access to places like the Swedish archipelago with its many islands ideal for outdoor pursuits, the picturesque Baltic Sea resorts, and Lapland, renowned for winter sports and pristine wilderness. These improved links are expected to open up a wider range of travel options for leisure and business travelers alike.

Looking ahead, the order marks a positive development for travelers who depend on regional flights for business or leisure. Bringing the Embraer E195-E2 into service is anticipated to offer greater scheduling options, increased comfort, and better access to destinations across Scandinavia. By updating its fleet, SAS is moving toward greener operations, offering travelers improved comfort with reduced noise and better fuel efficiency over the next ten years.
