Italy has revoked government approval for a proposed luxury glamping project at Cala Finanza in north-eastern Sardinia, opposite Tavolara island. The decision stops the Tavolara Bay project from moving ahead under special economic zone procedures, after residents, civic groups and environmental organisations challenged plans for a resort in a highly protected coastal area.

Cala Finanza project at a glance

  • Location: Cala Finanza, Loiri Porto San Paolo, north-eastern Sardinia
  • Nearby landmark: Tavolara island
  • Distance: about 20km south of Porto Rotondo
  • Project: luxury "glamour camping" development
  • Investor link: Brazilian developer JHSF
  • Plan: restore an old villa and add about 20 removable cabins
  • Government approval revoked: 2 July 2026
  • TAR hearing: scheduled for 8 July 2026

The project had sought approval through simplified special economic zone procedures, even though Cala Finanza sits in a marine protected area covered by Sardinia’s strict landscape rules, including limits within 300 metres of the sea. Residents, civic groups and environmental organisations challenged the plan, while Sardinia’s regional president filed an appeal with the administrative court.

The decision matters for visitors because Cala Finanza sits in one of Sardinia’s most sensitive coastal areas, close to Tavolara and the island’s marine scenery. Blocking the project keeps the focus on nature, small coastal stops, protected waters and low-impact access rather than a resort-led model. The area remains better suited to boat trips, beaches, diving and slower coastal travel.

For Sardinia, the case is bigger than one glamping project. It shows that protected coastlines can still beat fast-track development when local pressure, environmental law and regional politics line up. Travellers may not get a new luxury resort here, but they keep something rarer: a stretch of coast where the view is not automatically treated as real estate.
