Salzburg Airport Urges Early Checks As New Entry Rules Tighten

Salzburg Airport has issued guidance urging passengers to check entry requirements well before departure, as a growing number of destinations require electronic pre-clearance and stricter document checks. Travellers should confirm that their passport is valid for the required period and that they hold the correct type of document. Official government websites remain the recommended source for up-to-date entry information prior to travel.

Several countries now require electronic travel authorisation prior to arrival. Austrian citizens must apply in advance where required, as approval is often linked digitally to the passport and may involve a fee. From 25 February 2026, a UK ETA will become mandatory for all travellers, including those transiting. Similar systems already apply for the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Electronic Authorisation Requirements

  • United Kingdom: UK ETA mandatory from 25 February 2026
  • United States: ESTA required for air or sea arrivals
  • Canada: eTA required for entry by air
  • Australia: ETA or eVisitor required for tourists
  • New Zealand: NZeTA required for visa-free entry

Passengers are also encouraged to book airport parking online due to high demand. Flights to non-Schengen destinations could take longer at passport control due to the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), so passengers are advised to arrive at the airport with extra time to spare. Check-in usually opens two hours before departure, though Flydubai opens three hours prior. Cut-off times range between 40 and 60 minutes depending on the airline.

As more countries require online permits and apply stricter procedures, travellers need to sort paperwork well in advance. Failing to secure the correct authorisation or turning up after the check-in deadline can lead to denied boarding, even with a paid ticket. Submitting applications early and double-checking airline cut-off times reduces the risk of disruption at Salzburg Airport.
