Salzburg Adds Three Cultural Stops Beyond Mozart
Salzburg is widening its cultural offer with three museum projects that move the city beyond its familiar Mozart image. Two attractions are already open, while a major art expansion is due in 2027, giving first-time and repeat visitors more reasons to spend time around Mirabell, Hellbrunn and the Old Town. The additions also make it easier to build a broader culture-focused weekend without leaving the city.
Three Cultural Stops to Add Now and Next
- Orangerie Salzburg: Mirabell Gardens; open daily 9am–5pm; adults €8; one visit included with the Salzburg Card.
- Sound of Music Salzburg: Fürstenweg 33–35 at Hellbrunn; adults €8; bus 25 takes about 25–30 minutes from the centre.
- Belvedere Salzburg: Neue Residenz; opening planned for the first half of 2027.
- Booking: online tickets are available for the two museums already open.
The Orangerie combines Salzburg’s UNESCO story with Johann Michael Sattler’s panoramic view of the city and sits directly inside Mirabell Gardens, so it works as an easy central stop. At Hellbrunn, the Sound of Music museum covers both the Hollywood film and the real von Trapp family. The famous gazebo is nearby, making the visit easy to pair with Hellbrunn Palace and its park.
Belvedere Salzburg will add a different kind of reason to revisit the Old Town. The new branch of the Austrian Gallery Belvedere is planned inside the renovated Neue Residenz and will present highlights spanning 800 years of art history. Its location beside Residenzplatz and Mozartplatz means it can be combined with the cathedral, the reopened Salzburg Museum and the historic centre on foot.
A short Salzburg break can now be split between three distinct areas rather than centred only on Mozart sights. Mirabell is easiest to fit into a city-centre walk, while Hellbrunn needs more time for the bus journey and palace grounds. Sound of Music Salzburg is seasonal, so autumn and spring visitors should check current opening dates before travelling out to Hellbrunn.
