Rail Upgrades Reconnect Key Coastal Destinations
Rail services between Southampton and Portsmouth have resumed following a nine-day suspension for critical maintenance work. Engineers from Network Rail stabilised a 300-metre stretch of embankment between Swanwick and Fareham, installing a sheet pile wall designed to prevent landslides. Because the closure fell during the Easter season, construction could proceed without interfering with weekdays when commuter traffic is heavy or creating additional difficulty during rush hour.
Alongside the embankment stabilisation, a range of additional improvements was completed to future-proof the line. The footbridge at Hamble station was reinforced to minimise long-term maintenance. Overgrown vegetation was cleared along the route to avoid interference with signals and reduce the chance of leaves affecting track conditions. Wooden wheel timbers on the River Itchen viaduct were replaced with synthetic ones expected to last three decades longer and require less frequent attention.
The line between Southampton and Brighton has some great destinations – and with the tracks back open, I’d encourage people to make the most of our regular service along the coast.

With improvements in service, fewer delays, and a more comfortable ride, trains have become a smart and appealing way to travel around the area.
