Qatar Airways Rolls Out Starlink Wi-Fi Across Its Long-Haul Fleet
Qatar Airways has completed fitting 54 Boeing 777 aircraft with Starlink satellite internet technology, becoming the first airline worldwide to equip such a large number of widebody planes with this system. Qatar Airways now stands as the only carrier in the Middle East and North Africa to provide passengers with access to Starlink-enabled internet. The upgrade mainly targets long-haul flights, with the goal of improving connectivity throughout the airline’s wide-reaching network.
Completion of the installation occurred in just nine months, compared to the two years originally anticipated. The retrofit duration per aircraft was reduced from approximately three days to under ten hours, enabling upgrades to take place without interrupting scheduled flights. This effective method allowed Qatar Airways to speed up its digital transformation while minimizing inconvenience to passengers and crew.
Passengers flying on these equipped aircraft now have access to more reliable and faster internet service, with speeds reaching up to 500 Mbps. Passengers can now use video conferencing, streaming, online gaming, and remote work capabilities, addressing the persistent challenge of inconsistent in-flight internet. The upgrade brings greater ease to long-haul journeys, especially on flights that had few options for reliable connectivity.
Reliable and fast Wi-Fi access is likely to shape what passengers expect from in-flight services. Business passengers have the ability to work while in the air, while leisure travelers can access a greater variety of entertainment options. By implementing Starlink technology, Qatar Airways might encourage other airlines to upgrade their in-flight internet, signaling a growing focus within the industry on reliable connectivity during flights.
We promised the fastest, most seamless in-flight connectivity in the industry, and with Starlink we have delivered it faster and at an unmatched scale. Having completed our rollout programme for Boeing 777s, we are now fully focused on equipping our Airbus A350 fleet with Starlink, bringing this game-changing experience to even more routes across our global network of over 170 destinations.
This development highlights increasing traveler expectations for seamless digital connectivity during their entire journey. Improved internet access onboard adds convenience and flexibility, making it easier for passengers to stay connected regardless of location. As additional airlines implement similar technologies, in-flight internet is expected to become a routine and dependable feature of air travel.
