Portugal Strike Could Hit Summer Trips

Holidaymakers heading to Portugal in early June are being warned of possible delays as cabin crew, rail workers and metro staff prepare for a nationwide strike. The action is planned for 3 June and could affect flights and public transport across the country, just as the summer travel season begins to build.

The strike follows a vote by members of the Portuguese cabin crew union to join wider national action. The National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel (SNPVAC) has criticised proposed labour reforms, saying they would weaken established rights. The government’s plans include making dismissals easier and loosening restrictions on outsourcing, according to the report.

Expected Travel Disruption

The disruption is expected to involve several transport groups:

  • Date: 3 June
  • Possible flight impact: up to 500 flights
  • TAP impact: up to 300 daily flights
  • Other airlines named: Portugália and SATA
  • Public transport: Lisbon Metro and wider services

Lisbon, Porto, Faro and island connections may still be reachable, but travellers should leave more space around plans. Extra time could matter for beach transfers, train trips, hotel check-ins and onward journeys to the Algarve, Madeira or the Azores. Anyone planning a short break may want to avoid tight same-day connections or prepaid activities soon after arrival.

The timing is difficult because Lisbon Airport has already faced long queues linked to the EU Entry/Exit System rollout. Not every flight will be cancelled, but delays, queues and local transport gaps could still disrupt carefully timed plans. Travellers should check airline updates, follow rail and metro notices, and keep bookings flexible where possible.
