A new museum dedicated to whales will open in Andenes, Northern Norway, on 4 June 2027. The Whale is being built at the northern tip of Andøya, around 300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, in an area known for year-round whale encounters. Designed by Danish architect Dorte Mandrup, the centre will combine marine science, art, sound, storytelling and architecture in one coastal attraction.

Inside The Whale, visitors will find life-sized wooden killer whales, a gallery covering all 90 modern whale species and displays on whale anatomy. A darker multisensory area will recreate the deep ocean through whale sounds, while another section looks at industrial whaling and conservation. The building itself extends the experience outside, with a walkable roof overlooking the Norwegian Sea, surrounding mountains and nearby Andenes Lighthouse.

The opening gives visitors another reason to spend time in Andenes rather than come only for a whale safari. Boats head out into the deep waters off Vesterålen, where sperm whales can be seen year-round, while humpbacks and orcas are more common in winter. On land, travellers can add Andenes Lighthouse, coastal walks around Røyken and drives or cycling trips along the Norwegian Scenic Route Andøya.

Opening in early June puts The Whale into Andøya’s summer season, when long daylight hours make it easier to combine the museum with hiking and time on the water. Whale safaris remain weather-dependent, so keeping some flexibility in the itinerary is sensible. The museum also gives Andenes a substantial indoor attraction, making a longer stay easier to plan even when sea conditions rule out a boat trip.
