Britain’s transport network has restarted after the Christmas shutdown, but travellers moving around the New Year are facing widespread disruption. Rail services, Channel crossings, and parts of international air travel remain affected by delays, cancellations, and reduced capacity. The most difficult day is 30 December, when demand peaks ahead of the return to work in early January and pressure builds across multiple transport systems.

International rail services are under particular strain. Eurostar operations through the Channel Tunnel are severely disrupted following a failed LeShuttle train, with reports of passengers being delayed for hours. Eurostar has advised customers not to travel on 30 December, warning that services running may face heavy delays and late cancellations on routes between London, Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam.

We strongly advise all our passengers to postpone their journey to a different date. We regret that trains that can run are subject to severe delays and last-minute cancellations.

Rail disruption and station closures

Domestic rail travel across the UK has resumed unevenly. Staffing shortages, engineering work, and infrastructure issues are affecting services on several major routes. National Rail has confirmed widespread disruption, including:

  • No mainline trains at London Liverpool Street until 2 January
  • West Coast Main Line closure between Milton Keynes and Rugby until 4 January
  • No trains between Leeds and York until 3 January
  • Reduced services on South Coast routes due to signalling staff illness

Air travel pressure on transatlantic routes

Air travel problems are concentrated on services linked to eastern North America, where severe winter weather has grounded thousands of flights since Christmas Day. Airlines have reported cancellations and delays affecting both domestic and long-haul services. Current issues include:

  • Delays and cancellations at Toronto Pearson, Montreal, and Halifax
  • Late departures on overnight flights to London Heathrow
  • Cancelled onward connections across the US and Canada

Away from immediate disruption, some travel opportunities remain open for those able to adjust plans. Ferry services between Dover, Calais, and Dunkirk are operating normally, with free rebooking if sailings are missed. Meanwhile, aviation capacity remains high over the festive period, with Cirium reporting more than 42,000 flights scheduled from UK airports between 19 December and 4 January, serving destinations such as Alicante, Amsterdam, Dubai, Geneva, and Tenerife.
