New Night Bus Services in South West Benefit Travelers

This summer, night buses will be introduced in two areas of the South West, offering new travel options for locals and visitors alike. Following a successful trial in Barnstaple in December 2023, Devon and Cornwall Police have worked with partners to launch these services in Barnstaple and Newquay, making it easier for travelers to explore the region's nightlife safely and conveniently.

Starting from 6 July to 7 September, these services will operate on Saturdays, with Stagecoach providing buses in North Devon and First Bus covering Newquay. Each journey will cost £2, aiming to reduce "drink and drug-related incidents" and promote safe travel.

Inspector Andy Wills, responsible for the Barnstaple area, emphasized the significance of these services for both safety and enjoyment. He noted that alcohol and drugs can impair judgment, leading to issues such as drink or drug driving, violence against women and girls, and anti-social behavior. Wills highlighted that the night buses offer a "cost-effective and convenient" way to ensure travelers return to their accommodations safely after a night out.

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez shared her dedication to improving safety for women and addressing violence in communities, whether at home or in public spaces. Hernandez stressed that safe transportation home should be a given, not a luxury, and underscored the importance of ensuring that women and girls feel confident about their safety at night.

For travelers, these night buses provide an excellent solution for late-night transportation. The N1 Newquay night bus will run hourly from 00:23 to 04:23 BST, serving St Columb, Indian Queens, and Quintrell Downs. Meanwhile, Route 21 in North Devon will connect Barnstaple, Bideford, and Ilfracombe, with the last bus leaving at 04:00.
