Florida is once again preparing for a significant storm, following the recent destruction caused by Hurricane Helen. The state is now gearing up for what could be its largest evacuation effort since 2017, as Hurricane Milton, which has now intensified into a Category 1 storm, makes its way toward the western coast. According to forecasts from the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Milton is expected to make landfall near the Tampa Bay region by Wednesday, threatening areas still recovering from the havoc caused by Hurricane Helen, which struck northern Florida less than two weeks ago.

Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida cautioned that Milton could bring with it higher storm surges and more widespread power outages than those seen during the previous storm. He noted,
You have a storm and then have one less than two weeks later, two majors back-to-back, that is not something that is easy. That creates a lot of challenges
While recovery from Hurricane Helen has been ongoing around the clock, the pressure of two major storms in such a short span of time presents significant logistical challenges.
Hurricane Helen caused extensive damage across multiple states, including North Carolina and Florida, claiming over 200 lives. It is now considered the deadliest storm to hit the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Katrina, which resulted in nearly 1,400 fatalities in 2005.
