A group of eight British tourists in Albufeira, Algarve, caused a stir after being filmed dancing naked and simulating sex acts on a bar, prompting local authorities to take action.

The incident took place earlier this month in a bar on Rua da Oura, Albufeira's notorious party strip. A video shared on social media showed the men, aged between 35 and 50, performing explicit acts to the tune of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" from Disney's "The Lion King." The footage sparked widespread condemnation from locals, who described the behavior as "disgraceful" and "disrespectful."

Following the uproar, the National Republican Guard identified the men involved. This led to an emergency meeting on June 19, convened by Albufeira's mayor and attended by security forces and tourism sector representatives. The meeting aimed to establish a Code of Conduct to regulate tourist behavior in the area.

Mayor José expressed regret over the damage such incidents caused to Albufeira's reputation, noting that the region is generally known for its tranquility and safety. While acknowledging the need for nightlife venues, he emphasized the importance of curbing inappropriate behavior among tourists.

The issue of misbehaving tourists is not unique to Portugal. Nearby Spanish hotspots like Majorca, Ibiza, and Barcelona have seen protests against "over-tourism," with locals frustrated by the disruptive conduct of some visitors, including Brits, and the resulting increase in rent prices and damage to historical and natural sites. Another protest is planned for July 21 in Palma, Majorca.

Albufeira's Rua da Oura is renowned for its vibrant nightlife, attracting many Europeans, particularly British tourists, seeking a lively holiday. Despite the party reputation, the area also offers family-friendly activities such as watersports, theme parks, and excursions to nearby towns.

The recent incident highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing tourism and maintaining local decorum, prompting authorities to take decisive action to protect the region's image and quality of life.
