Devon's newest railway station, Marsh Barton, is marking its first anniversary with a special celebration on Monday, July 8th. Since opening, nearly 90,000 passenger journeys have been made, significantly enhancing travel options for residents and visitors alike.

The anniversary event will feature representatives from Devon County Council, Great Western Railway (GWR), Network Rail, and local dignitaries, who will gather to unveil a celebratory cake and commemorate the station's success.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment, and Transport, highlighted the station's positive impact. She noted that the increasing passenger numbers demonstrate a growing reliance on the Devon Metro network for travel into the city for work and leisure, reducing road congestion and improving air quality.

The £16 million Marsh Barton project, a collaborative effort between Devon County Council, Network Rail, and GWR, was constructed by GRAHAM. The station is designed with travelers in mind, featuring two fully accessible platforms, ticket machines, smart ticket readers, live train departure screens, waiting shelters, and help points. A pedestrian overbridge with ramps ensures accessibility for cyclists and disabled passengers.

Matthew Barnes, GWR Head of Strategic Development, emphasized the station's role in promoting sustainable travel. He pointed out that Marsh Barton has become a vital link for travelers, connecting them efficiently to the local economy and community.

Since its first passenger service on July 4th, Marsh Barton has become Exeter's ninth railway station, offering hourly GWR services between Paignton and Exmouth, with increased frequency during peak times. This development is particularly beneficial for travelers, enhancing connectivity between Alphington, Marsh Barton, and the Riverside Valley Park.

Chris Fuoco, Network Rail Devon and Cornwall Director, praised the collaborative effort in bringing another new station to the southwest. He underscored the station's importance in boosting rail travel and supporting the local economy, making it a significant asset for both residents and visitors.
