AirAsia X has postponed its planned return to London Gatwick, pushing back a new low-cost link intended to connect the UK with Kuala Lumpur via Bahrain. The service had been due to start in late June, but the airline cited conflict in the Middle East and volatile market conditions. Affected customers are being offered refunds or new travel dates.

Key Details for the AirAsia X Route

  • Route: London Gatwick–Kuala Lumpur, via Bahrain.
  • Airline: AirAsia X.
  • Original launch: 26 June 2026.
  • New timing: no earlier than August or September.
  • Planned frequency: daily service.
  • Aircraft: Airbus A330.
  • Passenger action: check booking status directly with AirAsia X or the booking agent.

The delay is significant because AirAsia X has not operated UK flights for more than a decade, and Gatwick had lined up Kuala Lumpur as its 15th Asian destination. Passengers with summer plans across Malaysia or wider Asia are most exposed. AirAsia X says affected customers can get a refund or move their booking, while anyone who booked through an agent should confirm who handles the refund.

Once operating, the route should help Gatwick passengers reach Kuala Lumpur without switching to a full-service Gulf or European connection. The Malaysian capital works for street food, shopping, the Batu Caves and onward Asian itineraries, with Gatwick naming connections such as Jakarta, Manila, Tokyo and Melbourne. The Bahrain stop also creates another option for passengers heading to the Gulf.

Until the revised launch is secure, this is a route to watch rather than a service to build tight connections around. Passengers should check their AirAsia X booking, keep written changes, and compare replacement fares before accepting a new date. The link could still be useful for autumn Asia trips, but summer plans need a backup.
